Description

Akua Allrich is a jazz vocalist, composer, and educator whose electrifying stage presence and genre-defying sound have captivated audiences in Washington, D.C. and beyond. A DC native, Allrich has proven herself to be a musician of extraordinary talent and passion. With finesse and charisma, she has carved out a distinct space for her powerful musical expression—blending jazz with Pan-African rhythms, blues, soul, reggae, funk, rock, and folk. She aptly summarizes her sound as “Jazz+” and delivers each genre with stunning authority.

Her debut album, A Peace of Mine, and the follow-up, Uniquely Standard: Akua Allrich Live!, quickly gained critical acclaim. All About Jazz’s Franz Matzner described her music as “flowing with a free, natural energy as engaging as her equally ingenuous personality.” The buzz soon reached international audiences, and in 2011 she signed a distribution deal with Japanese label AGATE/Inpartmaint Inc.

With her third release, Soul Singer, Allrich stepped further into her voice as a composer, showcasing her ability to merge genres into rich, cohesive musical experiences. Her most recent collaborative project, Universe by Idol Beings—created in partnership with acclaimed bassist Kris Funn—continues this innovation, earning her continued praise from critics and music lovers alike.

Allrich’s vocal style is rooted in jazz but stretches effortlessly across cultures and languages—including Portuguese, French, Spanish, Xhosa, and Twi. Her sound and spirit have drawn comparisons to Nina Simone, Miriam Makeba, Bob Marley, and Oscar Brown, Jr. She has also created celebrated tribute concerts honoring the legacies of Simone, Makeba, and other groundbreaking Black women in music.

A proud graduate of Howard University, Allrich holds a B.M. in Jazz Studies and a Master’s in Social Work. Her mentors include Kehembe V. Eichelberger, Grady Tate, and Charles Covington. Raised in a musical household—her father, Agyei Akoto, co-founded the jazz group Nation—she grew up immersed in a rich archive of jazz, R&B, blues, folk, and Pan-African records, shaping her early artistic foundation and deep appreciation for the global Black musical tradition.

From local stages to international platforms, Akua Allrich continues to inspire with her radiant, soul-stirring voice and commitment to cultural storytelling. Her artistry defies boundaries—resonating deeply across generations, genres, and geographies.
